This course introduces you to the processes of language development and the possible strategies you can adopt as a preschool teacher to develop young children’s language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course is arranged in five units. Unit 1 introduces you to the concept of language and its importance to young children. Unit 2 introduces you to the four language skills that ought to be developed in young children. It also explores the theories, approaches, methods, strategies and tools you will need to facilitate children’s language development. Unit 3 introduces you to the concept of designing and setting a literacy rich learning environment. Unit 4 will equip you with the knowledge to set appropriate language learning activities for young children. In this unit, you will learn to prepare daily routines, lesson plans and schemes of work for a language lesson. Lastly, unit 5 introduces you to the concept of functional literacy. You will be exposed to the basics of composition writing, comprehension, report writing, letter writing and other functional literacy skills.
