Our Objectives

MITER shall be a large scale multi-disciplinary teacher education research and capacity building entity set to achieve the following specific objectives:

  1. Promote and facilitate collaborative and/or interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary teacher education research and the enhancement of teacher education research networking capacity and infrastructure development.
  2. Undertake teacher education research and continuous professional development for teachers, faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students and enhance the quality of academic programs delivery in academic units.
  3. Contribute to the university’s strategic educational and other research missions and to support synergies between research, teaching, and learning. The institute will attract, maintain, and award talent in teacher education research, innovations, and capacity building at Makerere University and beyond.
  4. Increase and effectively manage the teacher education research resources and infrastructure to optimize benefits to the wider education research fraternity.
  5. Spur growth of teacher educators and teacher education community outreach in a manner that sustainably causes positive change through the transfer and mobilization of teacher education knowledge gained through research for the benefit of society.
  6. Promote the status and research profile of Makerere University nationally, regionally, and internationally through coordinated, enhanced and quality research output.
  7. Produce evidence-based data that informs national policy on teacher education.
  8. Lend prestige, standing, and exposure of researchers from the CEES and other teacher education training institutions in Uganda to work together on a wide range of teacher education challenges.
  9. Offer targeted capacity-building in form of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs and other professional short courses and executive training that may not fit in the regular academic education programs of the existing academic departments.
  10. Provide substantial support to teacher education academic programs in the country.
  11. Undertake commissioned teacher education research and provide outputs that can inform governmental policy and interventions for teacher education transformation
  12. Engage in teacher education consultancy work and/ or providing professional advisory and technical services on behalf of the University.
